[s-cars] e-brake woes

Gabriel;

I've replaced both e-brake cables on my '94 S4 with the exhaust removed but
the driveshaft in place. As Peter says, long reach needle-nose pliers with
tips in all three configurations (straight, 45 degree angle, 90 degree
angle) were required. It's a fiddly job but can be done. If you remove the
driveshaft, accurately matchmark the position of the bearing mount and make
sure you ID the shims between the mount and the body and reassemble the shim
stacks properly. This should put the driveshaft back in it's original
position. If you get vibration or droning after reassembly, you'll have to
use the tool to align it.

Gabriel:

I did it on the garage floor on one of my 200 wagons, as well on a 93 100...
in both cases it was done with both the driveshaft AND exhaust in place.
The "secret" tools required were high quallity, long reach need nose
pliers, and a small cats paw.

Both these tools will allow you to work "around" the obstructions of the
exhaust and drive shaft.
spraying the nuts mounting the heat shields etc, with your favorite rust
penetrant ahead of the R&R is highly recommended
