Try Charlie Smith's web pages for some transmission information.

There have been several 6-speed conversions and mishaps by listers
which usually results in a good transmission for sale. See
<s-cars.org> or <audiworld.com> classifieds and e-bay as well.
Champagne motors in Denver area and Autobahn-Performance in Atlanta
area used to offer upgrades and repairs. I have lost the information
on a well-regarded shop in Bend, OR. There's a shop advertises
quattro repairs in Michigan called AutoSportsUnlimited.com, a
combination sales, salvage, rebuild, and parts outfit. No personal
experience with any for this specific work. My slant is try the used
market from someone reputable you can find later. The upgrades and
repairs have been in the $3500 range for gear or synchro work and most
say, I might as well do the clutch while I'm in there.
