[s-cars] Magnetic filters for oil any good?

Many people in racing put magnets in or around the oil filters. I have
done so with my Canton Mecca filter as it was recommended by a few
engine builders who do enduro motors. If you have a stock or improved
filter you will still miss these small particles that are mostly held in
a colloidal suspension in the oil. My filter is an 8 micron depth
filter and I still see particles coming through. Most of all parts that
ware in a motor are metallic/ferritic/have alpha ferrite in them, this
is a good idea to put a magnetic pickup, it is added insurance.
You may think it isn't necessary, but try to find a reason not to have
it.
Next time you dump your oil out stick a magnet in it swirl it around and
see what sticks to the magnet, you will be surprised.

Not sure I completely agree with your first point.... but I certainly
agree with you on the 2nd one and for under $5 dollars I think it's a
worthy experiment to find out if you are right about the first point...
This place has them for cheap and all different sizes:

Cheers, /James "no turbolators for me" Murray.
P.S. Going to try it on my car and my father's diesel van...

My inclination would be to suggest that this is wasted effort and
ex$pen$e. With an aluminum engine most of the bits of metal inside the
engine should be also of aluminum. Aluminum is a non-magnetic metal and
will not be attracted to a magnet. Granted, there are steel parts as
well
and bits of wear debris from the steel would tend to be collected by a
magnet. The question would be, "Is it enough to make a difference?"
That
can perhaps be best answered by two more questions. "How frequently do
you
change the oil and filter?" "Do you use a quality filter?"
The third question would be: "If this actually is a good idea then why
spend ~$50 for a magnet when quality magnets can be purchased for FAR
less
than $50?"
The fourth question might be: "Psst! Hey, Buddy - wanna buy a
Turbolator
for your car?" :-)
