[s-cars] FMIC Alternatives, try the stock one.

Ya know the stock one if probably the right solution for someone not
willing to pay 2k. Coming from someone who built his own I would have
to say that if you where to buy an intercooler yourself and build it you
would be hard pressed to do it for less. First you need access to quite
a bit of machinery and second the skill and time to do it. If you can
find someone to do it for less then they probably aren't the kind of
fabricator that you would really want doing it for you. I chuckle a bit
when people complain about the price because it seems obvious to me they
have no idea what it takes to do it.

The size of the intercooler matters very little, let's say you get a
smaller intercooler you may save 2-$300 dollars, but then you have to go
thought developing a whole new system. The labor is basically the same
so you have an anemic 2-1.7k intercooler.

Subject: [s-cars] FMIC Alternatives

Iwas looking at a Turbonetics catalogue the other day and noted that
Spearco has a number of intercooler "kits", i.e. Air to Air intercooler
cores and different end tank designs. So I was thinking, if a person is
not going into the stratosphere (so to speak) with horsepower but was in
the 320ish range (mild RS2), then couldn't a smaller (height, width)
intercooler that doesn't require cutting of the bumper be sized and
fabricated (from off-the-shelf parts)?

I think the Mike Pedersen (sp) FMIC design is great and has evolved
nicely. However, in some ways, it is too large , too custom and too
expensive (US$2000!) for most "normal" applications. A FMIC that could
be bolted on to the car with out having to modify the car would be much
better for many of us. Any thoughts (Hap, Mike, Scott J.??)
