According to Bentley, that is just about right.

Subject: [s-cars] Brake pressure regulator
While I was under my car, I also noticed that there is no spring tension on
my brake pressure regulator. In fact there is about ¼ inch of play. The
spring can slide out of the slot that it's in. I can adjust it to be
tighter, but what is the proper adjustment technique? Also what is the
effect of this being so loose? See illustration for what I am talking
about: http://www.gabrielcaldwell.com/pix/Audi/bpr.gif I have a Bentley
for my 90 but none for my S4. I read the technique for the 90, but I'm not
sure if it's the same.
