Paul,
Thanks for your help on this.  Idiot boy me had connected the small black wire on the starter to the wrong connector =O  
50 50 chance = 90% chance of guessing wrong.
Anyway my long national nightmare is over and the pig fired up pronto:)  
Now sporting a relit ambient temp display and a newly Por 20 painted turbo and fresh K&N.  No to get that darn sound shield back on.
Thanks to all who lent me moral support through my own stupidity.
And to anyone having wierd electric/display issues I would say change that ignition switch pronto.  It's really ez and could save you the buck twenty for a new starter.
