the '93 S4 manual says that chains may be used on the front wheels only,
provided that the chains have fine pitch links protruding no more
than 1/2" from the tread and sidewalls.

but in the next paragraph, it states "Snow chains must not be used on
the compact spare wheel or on tires size 225/50ZR16."

isn't 225/50ZR16 the standard tire on the S4?  that's what my '92 has.
has anybody used chains with 225/50ZR16?  what year was the car?
