[s-cars] RE: Valve Job Anyone?

Tom,
I guess one reason to consider the bottom-end job is that if we
do the valve job and don't do the rings and bearings..."what if" the
increase compression causes the old rings to leak? Now what would be
the labor to basically start again? Do you have to remove the head
again if you just want to do the bottom end rings and bearings? Guess
it is sort of risk management.
As for if ASW and Dave Jones can put the motor back together to
factory specs I don't think I am concerned about that as they will hone
the cylinder walls, new rings, lower bearings, and "maybe" new rods if I
am gun-ho.

Yes 7A cam already installed.

The new 7A modified head is a head that Dave was going to put in his car
himself and he mentioned that if we do need to back off timing then that
is something that can be done pretty easily by Steve Eiche.

I would love to do the FMIC and save the $$...still debating that also.
I would just "hate" to have to do this all again and basically I will
have a NEW engine after this.

Cheers

cp

Cody,

If it was my car, I think I would have the existing head rebuilt, drop
in the 7A cam (although I think you are already running the cam, no?),
and ignore the bottom end. My reasoning it this: As far as you know,
there is nothing wrong with the bottom end, and these cars almost never
have ring issues. It's pretty hard to do a better job machining and
assembling the bottom end than the factory.

What is the advantage of the higher compression head? Won't you need to
get your chips re-programmed to back off timing advance to avoid
pinging?

I'd spend the extra cash on an intercooler.

Tom

Hey Tom,
Car has about 151K miles on it. The loss is on the Exhaust
Valves. They "estimate" that it will cost around ~$3300+tax to do:
- Valve Job with exchange for Modified 7A head (Swain Coating)
- New Piston Rings and Lower Bearings (As with the increased compression
w/ new the head and good non-leaky valves...this may cause increase
blow-by on the OLD rings)...so one of those "while your in there" and
only adds another 500 bucks to the job or so
- Waterpump and timing belt
- ARP Head Bolts
- Metal Head Gasket
- Fluids
- Labor

The thing I am having a hard time to swallow (even more) is whether or
not I should do the larger rods for another $1000 but I don't have plans
to do any more engine mods besides a FMIC. Thoughts here guys?

Cody,

How many miles on your car? Where is the loss; leakdown should tell you
whether its intake or exhaust valves or if it is rings, right?

Tom
