I believe the most important function of the sound dampener, if not the
nominative function, is to keep corrosion down on electrical contacts in
the engine compartment. The second most important function is to keep
air flowing to the intercooler and oil cooler. In my opinion these
functions override the inconvenience of looking where one is about to
park.
