The car was never painted - it, er...uh, was my mom's car before I got it
(wagon). One family ownership.
I'm sure it was acrylic urethane, but not certain of the brand. It does not
matter, though, since all the paints have changed so much recently - all by
environmental mandate. I painted the hood on my S6 with Standox - a top-line
euro-brand. It has been 2 years and it has not held up as well as the factory
finish, mainly due to shrinkage. The best paints are regularly changed to
comply, then become lousy and a new brand is the best. It's impossible to keep up.
In general, though, the Euro brands appear to outperform US brands, although
any can be made to work, it just takes effort.
I suppose we'll be stuck with water-based paints eventually. It will be good
if they can be made to work, as then maybe the backyard Auidiphile can paint
his own hood again without major training and equipment and save the
environment at the same time!
