“Does anyone know if this shift knob:
Will work on the S-car? My 97 has a leather, dumb shaped shift knob.
I'd prefer to have just a knob. Nothing else, a knob. This VW walnut
burl should match the interior and it has no shape. It has Reverse in
the proper location and is 5-speed.
In addition, are there any short shifter kits available for the stock
5-speed? What of Frank's lead kit?

“I think that kit was built with component changes from Brendan Rudak. I
also think he works for ASW in Boulder CO now. AutoSport Werks. I have
photos in here someplace. Installation apparently requires transmission
removal. be careful..
Because if you follow Bill Mahoney's slippery slope, that short shift
kit will cost you a 6 speed tranny, flywheel , clutch.. yadda etc.
while you have the tranny out!”

I would 'guess' that most all vag knobs will skrew on to any vag shaft.
I currently have 3 knobs in stock and am actually in the midst of
chasing what IMHO is the crème de la crème of knobs, butofcourse pricey.
Point is that shift knobs are a great example of the slippery slope...
start out thinking that "yeah that $40 alcantara knob is really nice,"
next thing you know you want/need the SSK and whilst you're yankin the
trans, should do the clutch, six speed and flywheel. Then with all this
new found stop and go, you'll want a new suspension, big reds, HRSB and
torsen differential. After discovering the old wheels don’t fit over
big reds you justify that bigger wheels are no problem cause your
current tires already had a thousand miles on them. The car will now
handle so well you'll have to add a proper turbo and rs2 gofast parts.
Knowing you're now king of the hill you have to take it out on the track
where you'll discover race gas and the need for the big FMIC.
And that's how it goes, but then you're done right?
HTH
Cheers'

Ps -BTW SSK does not require trans removal IIRC, though it would be
whay easier:)
