I don't have a VAG-COM... However, thanks for the suggestion---I'll give
it a try tomorrow.

Your suspicion of the alarm or some other starter defeat sounds
interesting. I'm not an expert and perhaps the AAA guys isn't either,
but I've got lots of headlight and other accessories, yet no sign that
the starter is getting any juice...

This happened to me when the alarm was tripped.  No audible warning was
ever given and it took me over an hour to learn what happened to trip
it.  Do you have a VAG-COM?  

Disconnect the battery and wait 5 minutes or so, then try again.  

It's worth a shot...
