This happened to me when the alarm was tripped. No audible warning was ever
given and it took me over an hour to learn what happened to trip it. Do you
have a VAG-COM?

Disconnect the battery and wait 5 minutes or so, then try again.

While you may have already solved this (I have a bunch of digests to read),
I experienced a similar thing to Scott last week, 0 F. Somehow I pushed the
unlock button on the IR remote twice quickly, unlocking then locking again
the car in an instant. I had to push a third time to unlock. Go to get in,
note the hazard button light flashing, think nothing of it... until the no
start issue. Nothing. Get out, lock car, unlock, problem solved. No
battery disconnect. Interesting, huh?

If not, maybe the infamous cable-to-the-starter has finally corroded
through? Mine looked marginal at best last I was under there. If your
battery were FUBAR, you'd have no dash lights, etc., so that should get you
going in the right direction at least.

Good luck, HTH, blahblahblah.
