[s-cars] Could it be the GP RS2 turbos are "over" spec?

Dave,

The PSI output (and not VOLUME, which is a function of temp also) of the turbo in our cars is generally a function of the controls on the wastegate, which in itself is controlled by the ECU (I say more or less, would like someone to make a top WGFV, ECU controlled please).

If you slapped a K27 on your car, you'd see more or less the same psi, of course at differernt rpm levels, but much more volume.

Are you running Pastore software? I get to 28-29 psi in 5th gear anytime I want, at 2.9 bar setting, no pinging, 91 octane. I do have a bigger turbo than you however (bigger = cooler charge at same psi = more volume. Generally...) What worries me more is the pinging. What it says is that there is something wrong somewhere in the system (electrical, fuel delivery, etc.) , with the gasoline, or the turbo is just being asked to put out too much HOT air, but I find the last hard to believe.

I am starting to wonder whether the recent new batch of RS2 turbos from the TJM Motorsport GP (no reflection on them) are, in fact, putting out more pressure and/or flow than the originals. I say this because I was seeing 28 psi on peak boost and was getting pinging until I turned my VMAP down to 2.8 Bar. Now I "only" see 24 psi and get but a little pinging. I am going to be checking my fuel supply system but I am wondering if these new turbos are actually over spec with respect to flow and pressure. Any others with the same thoughts?

Dave F.
