Mark:  We feel your pain.  This form of timing belt "failure" must be
quite rare. I remember issues with the keyway on the crank shearing off
but not the whole gear self destructing.

I don't think the cams stopped in a position that avoids interference.
I think you will find the interference has already happened and at least
some of the valves are bent.

Bummer man.
