John,

FWIW, i had the same thing happen on my avant and was equally pi$$ed at
what the dealer wanted for the piece. i considered the fix that Franco
posted and the idea of inserting a metal hinge and/or different pedal
as Sr. Hap has done to the green machine. Call me "frugal" in this
instance, but after deciding which way i wanted to go and looking for
the parts- after about 3 days of driving w/o the pedal "cover" i got
completely used to it and have been driving it this way ever since.

Now, unless there is a regulation (DMV, insurance, ect.) that says it
has to be there, i am very happy w/o it in place. Besides, it must add
a horsepower or 2 by being able to mash the pedal even farther on 3rd
gear pulls. . . or maybe a reduction in curb weight, right? ;). . . .

sincerely,

matt ludwig.
