[s-cars] Need NH/VT driving advice

Ok, so I need to drive from Pittsburg NH to Saranac Lake NY,
looking for route advice.

What I'm thinking is Pittsburg to Newport (via Canaan), then
to Johnson, to 89 (via 104 and 104A), then to Gordon Landing
to take the ferry to Plattsburgh.

Can anyone suggest a better route that
a) doesn't involve border crossings
b) doesn't pass through Rouses's Point and Champlain (major
   roadworks around there from the look of things).
