Folks,
I am finally back home after the cross-country trip in a Corolla.
While on that trip I had a distinct pleasure of meeting our John Larson in his
specialised Audi shop (West Coast Garage in Santa Maria, CA) when I drove upstate
to the Silicon Valley for a weekend. The quattro list camaraderie never ceased to
amaze me. It seems to me that wherever we go we manage to find fellow quattro
owners and they are always willing to extend a friendly hand.
I would like to extend a sincere "thank you, Sir!" to John for arranging for me to
smog test this old 49-state legal Toyota in a friendly garage in LA. The car has
passed with flying colours the "enhanced" (the even more strict) coastal test. I
guess my efforts did pay off after all. In that car I replaced everything from the
timing belt to the OXS sensor in the two weeks that it was hanging on jack stands
in my garage.
For the trip back I rented a Focus from Hertz and managed to save half of the day
versus the trip in the Corolla. Once again I came to a conclusion that European
cars rule. Not only dynamically, but also, and most importantly, due to their far
far superior ergonomics. Especially so on a long coast-to-coast trip.
