Michael,

Why don't you just replace the crank? I just bought one from Audi for $800.
That has to be cheaper than another engine.

Well, Greg at Autofirme pulled the pan and called me with the bad (really
bad) news. Not only did the #5 rod bearing spin, but pulling #2 rod cap
showed the crank to be deeply scored. The option route it looks like I am
taking is dropping in a new used motor that came out of another stock '95 S6
that was T-boned at 70,000 miles. While it appears that finances will not
permit taking this motor up to a full RS2 conversion, I would like to throw
on the RS2 EM or equivalent (IA, etc.) to prepare for the future.
Unfortunately, I missed out on Ray Tomlinson's deal. Anyone know of a used
or good deal EM on the market? We'll obviously install a new timing belt,
water pump, etc. before installation. Any other recommendations?

Greg also described what he saw in the crankcase after pulling the pan. No
significant metal bits. However, there was a bunch of rubber/plastic bits
from an oil pick-up tube there. Plus there was a chunk of the stuff stuck
in the present pick-up, limiting oil flow. It would appear that prior to my
ownership of the car, something bad had happened, and the oil pan and
pick-up were replaced. The diminished oil flow was apparently the cause of
what we are now seeing. The recommendation made to insure everything is
really cleaned out when you do any bottom end work should be taken fully to
heart.

It would therefore look like I'll have various bits & pieces off the old
motor available for sale in the next few weeks. The head will be available
plus whatever else we do not have to transfer over to the new motor
(manifolds, etc.). Let me know if anything is of interest.
