Sean, do you know for sure if the knock sensor output will always register as a Fault Code and remain stored? What I mean is if there is a knock due to whatever (bad gas, rattling, etc) and the KS sends a signal to the ECU to retard timing, will it also store a fault code? or will the ECU only store a fault code when on of the KS goes bad? (I'm assuming the ECU gets a signal from one KS and not the other, so it registers the KS as faulty).

If you check your diagnostic fault codes (DTC) with a VAG 1552 or
VAG-com, it will tell you which, if any knock sensors are bad.
