I just got back to Denver yesterday afternoon from a 3 day UAL trip and here
I am on another airplane as a passenger. I'm headed back to Evahboost from
Kansas City where I helped my youngest daughter buy a new to her car. We found
her a Cashmere Grey/Melange(the same color combo her mother drives) 2001 Audi A6
2.7tt with 19,000 miles. It was an Audi executive car and comes with the Audi
Assured additonal 2 years of warranty good up to 100,000 miles. Who says kids
can't learn from their parents?
The last time I dynoed my car it pulled 412hp with 430ft/lbs of torque. The
car was ran great on the dyno but the day was not without incident. Just before
leaving Evahboost I discovered a crack at the weld mounting the down pipe to
the turbo mounting flange. I had been cleaning the engine and must have
disturbed some wiring because the car also decided it wanted to misfire badly and I
only had 3 hours until my schedule run time. A quick call to Brendan Rudak of
Autosport Werks got us trouble shooting the misfire and his roommate Brooks
headed to ASW to do some patch welding for me. I was able to rejiggle every wire
I had touched and got the car to start and headed down the mountain. As I got
closer to ASW,the car just started runnign better and better.
Brooks met me and he started welding but since time was an issue we couldn't
pull the downpipe and he was only able to patch the weld. After thanking him I
was off to the shop in Parker for the dyno event. The car was still misfiring
intermittantly but getting better all the time. I was doing pull after pull
getting my fuel pressure dialed in with my newly reserected wide band oxegyn
sensor. I got to the shop and they were ready for me to drive right on to the
dyno. The car missed a few times as I pulled on the dyno and Brendan's giving me
this look like what's wrong with your car. Anyway the techs got everything
all hooked up and off I went on my first pull. Woohoo, no misses and no
problems. In fact that first pull was my best. I wanted to try a higher boost setting
for the 2nd pull and I commited the cardinal sin of dyno runs. Thou shalt only
change one parameter per run. Well I also increased the fuel pressure to get
things a little richer. The boost I added was too much and I felt the ECU
dialing my timing back and sure enough the 2nd run was down from the first. I
tried to get it back on the 3rd but overshot the fuel a little on the lean side.
I've only driven my car a little since I picked it up from ASW on Friday but
I can feel a difference. I've had to dial the fuel pressure back a good amount
from what I had before the install to get the same 12.00 mixture reading on
the wideband. Plus, the car feels stronger. Some of this is because of the
exhaust and charge air track refinements but well above the boost threshold the
car is pulling real strong. I am very happy with the enhanced fuel delivery
system that Dave Jones and Brendan Rudak engineered and fabricated for my car. I
wanted larger fuel lines and a higher flowing fuel pump but Dave came up with
the scheme of using the stock fuel pump to feed a small reservoir and plumbing
in the Bosch Motorsport high flow pump with larger lines to the fuel rail.
That way we avoided the costly job of plumbing larger lines all the way from the
tank. Sportec will be at ASW at the end of March and I'm sceduled for another
round of custom tuning and I can't wait to see what the dyno shows.
I'm going to try and get the summer tires on for a few days this week to get
a feel for the new suspension. I've also promised Dave Dawson I'd take him to
my EPA Superfund site polishing shop to get him some bits and pieces purdied
up. We'll see what he thinks when he drives my car. That's all for now. Hey
Dave Forgie, we could take a few parts for you;-)
Hap, soon to be home in Evahboost but stuck in the back of this plane for
now, Maguire
