[s-cars] Smoke at startup

Aaron, its not so easy to describe the smoke, other than it seemed to come
after high boost as the car set and idled in stop/go traffic. I speculate
that oil was making its way into the combustion chamber in high boost
conditions, then burning off during idle. There was no smoke upon cold
startup, which is usually the case with worn guides or rings. The turbo came
off first at the recommendation of my mechanic, as I have no facility to do
the work myself (other than one undisclosed location in Connecticut between
the hours of 1:00 and 4:00 AM) I had to go w/ his recommendation. Smoke is
gone, but the strange thing is that the RS2 turbo that came off is quite
clean (does not appear to be a turbo seal problem). I had a compression test
and a leak down test done at the time the turbo came off. The leak down
showed some leakage in 3 cylinders, and the compression was down in three,
but only two cylinders in common between the two tests. Hmmm, either someone
goofed, or hit the crack pipe that day. The car has always run fine and
idled smooth, I have done several long trips (1500+ miles) without any
reliability concerns or changes in MPG, though I did not want the smoking to
get worse. Anyway, I would like to do another compression/ leak down test
myself to confirm or reject some of my crazy theories about build-up on
valves and/or seats. Will report back if I find anything conclusive.

Hey Serge,
Now you have us curious - why did you take off the RS goodies?
Just cause a little smoke or more serious reliability concerns?
Thanks
Aaron

Lee,
My 95 avant started to do a similar thing late summer. I noticed it mostly
with A/C running at idle (high vacuum). This happened mostly after high
boost runs (car was full RS2 less cam). I have taken the RS2 goods off the
car since then, and now no smoke whatsoever. Have you checked compression or
done a leak down test?

I just noticed that my '95.5 S6 smokes pretty badly just after startup, when
the engine is warm. I have not noticed it when the engine is cold.
If I start the car and let it idle it will begin to smoke quite a bit. If I
drive off I see no smoke, and then if I come to a stop I see no further
smoking.
I'd tell you whether it's blue or white smoke, but I'm not sure as I'm color
impaired.
Any thoughts on what it could be? Leaky fuel injector? Oil getting past the
valve guides or rings while the car is sitting?
Other thoughts?
