To get the code for my radio, the guy at the dealership I went to (Clair) had 
to pull the radio out to get the serial number of the radio.  This, in
conjunction with the VIN, was enough for them to look up the code in their
computer.  No charge.

I got the impression that they do this code routine frequently.  I don't
know whether they actually need both numbers (VIN and radio SN) or if
they are verifying one against the other.
