Finally had new tires installed Saturday.Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3,
235-45-17.  Very sticky, quiet and have the best rim protection I have
ever seen.  It is amazing how much new tires improved the cars ride. 
I got them at the local Discount Tire outlet who more or less matched
the Tire Racks price.  They did then bush me for $40 for some kind of
dynamic load balancing?? Where supposedly the tire is rotated into the
optimum position and then balanced.. I don't know.. sounded like
something useful.  Anyway they seem to be great so far and I would
highly recommend at this point.
I kept one good tire, as I have an extra slightly bent rim that I
thought I'd use as a full size spare, but discovered a full wheel will
not fit under the 3rd seat in the avant:(   Maybe will work if the seat
is unbolted on one side.. 
I also flushed my cooling system, installed a new thermostat and made
the switch to Tornado red coolant to match my car and more importantly
the coolant used in my wifes A8.
