my $.02 on W/G springs

If your spring is too soft your boost escapes before it has a chance to
build. my car suffered from this. it's pretty well modified with a
k26/27 turbo and ECU programmed to trip at 26 psi. 

If the spring is too stiff you can overboost before your wastegate can
dump it. we forced the W/G shut and easily could make 30 psi in
overboost.

like you said, there's no free power here. what is your ECU and turbo?
