Once you get your turbo and header, you've only just begun your quest. You
will also need a custom downpipe. These tubular headers and the Sport Q IMs
require you to abandon the stock air box since they mount the turbo right where
the airbox currently resides. These large hybrid turbos also put your power at
or beyond the theoretical limit of the stock rods. Cody Payne's recent rod
incident with his newly rebuilt engine with only the Super RS2 Ola Especiale
turbo, points out the weakness in the stock components. In addition there is the
short comings of the stock I/C. I never mentioned this before during the recent
FMIC debate but with the additional flow from a larger Hybrid or RS2 even you
will heat soak your I/C much sooner. This hybrid will absolutely require a
larger FMIC to battle the increased requirements. My tuner, Dave Jones of
Autosport Werks would not allow me to go with my larger hybrid unless I went with my
current FMIC at the same time.
In addition, you will also need a Big MAF upgrade. Somewhere around 420 or so
crank horsepower, the velocity through your stck/RS2 MAF will suck out the
hot wire coil. This will require the PBMAF upgrade and with or without you'll
also need custom software. Did I mention bigger injectors? So, what seems fairly
reasonable on the surface can get real intense further down the slope. If
you're not considering these other mods I would highly recommend staying with the
RS2 or T3/T4 Garret hybrid route. There are lots of SW options that do a
great job and have been proven on the dyno.
