Tom,
You definitely need to keep using these metal cups with the Bilsteins.
The bottom concave part of this cup was used to retain the OEM bumpstop.
You no longer need that function.
However, the top convex part of the cup is needed to distribute
the shock compression loads onto the strut mount.
Just hold one of these cups against the bottom of a strut mount
and you can see how they were designed for eachother.
So, your hunch is correct. These are the things that are needed to
prevent the dreaded dimple in the hood.
