I'm not claiming to be an expert on this, just noting that sometime in the
past I learned just the opposite of what you're saying about heating things
with holes in them.  It would be logical to think that the hole gets smaller
because of expansion of the material, but it really gets bigger because of
the whole object getting bigger.  I think this was in some sort of science
class and we did an experiment to demonstrate it, but it's been so long
since I've been in school and my memory is going to fast that it's hard to
be absolutely sure about anything!
