Well, Dave, _my_ S6 has the display for CD and track.  :)  It shows up
in the multifunction display in place of the FM or AM frequency.

The transceiver box is non trivial.  I have looked into it, and besides
a fuse, it has an IC and some related parts.  The IC is probably a gate
array.  You would have to reverse engineer it.
