[s-cars] RE: New or nearly-new car purchase

Dan-
Having seen the new Jetta GLI 1.8T, I'm intrigued, but the fact of the
matter is that the Golf/Jetta, at least in the A4 chassis, is still a
rolling,
understeering pig, otherwise it would be under consideration. The other
fact
of the matter is that I'm looking for something with a lot better
power/weight
ratio- the Miata is not really acceptable to me in terms of
power/weight, but
it handles well, same with the Boxster.

The Focus SVT is the same problem as the Mini- not enough power-
otherwise,
I'd look at the Civic Si. The other strikes against the Focus are that I
hate the
interior layout and it's not as nice as the Civic Si or Mini inside.

Once I get rid of my 200mi commute, I'm planning on getting something
with decent
power- practicality doesn't matter too much, as long as it's a
good-handling, reliable
and doesn't look horrible inside/out.

If $30k was in my budget, there would only be 3 new cars under
consideration- Subaru
WRX STi, Mitsubishi Evolution 8 and the Pontiac GTO. Including used,
then I would add
the C5 Corvette (don't think I can get a Z06 for that kind of money),
possibly the E46 M3,
the Infiniti G35 Coupe and the Nissan 350Z Track.

Interesting question..... Someone else mentioned the MINI Cooper S... In
that same vein, how about the Ford Focus SVT? Not sure on the
reliability but it would still be under warranty..... Or a GTI with the
1.8T engine.... From a sedan perspctive, the Jetta 1.8T would be a nice
package, as would the VR6.....
