I've been following this thread and since I have owned/driven lots of
Camaros and Mustangs between '65 and today as well as owning an S4 I just
wanted to clear up a couple of things.
First of all I don't know where you guys are getting your weights from:
> A mustang is about 1500 lbs lighter and comes with....
A newer Mustang, i.e. 94 and up is about 3200 lbs for the GT variety. The
79-93 models were about 100 lbs lighter. The T-Bird is also not less than
3200 pounds. Since the S-Car, according to the dragstrip scale, is about
3750 there is only a 500lb difference not 1500. Hell, I don't even think a
Miata weighs less than 2400 lbs.
Secondly, the stiff suspension argument is different depending on what part
of the country you live in. If you live in FL or Southern CA where the
roads don't undergo freeze/thaw cycles you can live comfortably with a much
stiffer suspension. Case in point was my 1987 Trans AM GTA. When I lived
in FL it was awesome, moved to Denver and I had to get dental work done
after every time I drove it. It still cornered unbelievably well, much
better than the '93 and up Camaros/TAs. For 90% of daily driving, however,
I don't notice the difference between my '92 S4 and the Trans Am I used to
drive. Maybe it's a much different story with the post 93 models, but I
just don't see the difference as all that important off the track. Sure the
nose dives into the corners when you take them hard, but I guess I console
myself with the fact that I don't ever worry about making it home in a snow
storm.

I can't help but jumping in here.
The S4/S6 is a big heavy 4 door sedan. It's a fast comfortable luxury sedan
and from what I can tell, we all seem more than please with our choice.
But just cuz that's the car I'm driving this week, it doesn't make it the
best handling car on the road. In fact, I think it lacks a lot in the
handling department. A mustang is about 1500 lbs lighter and comes with
stiffer springs and even a rear sway bar -- something that Audi decided to
cut out.
I've owned a mustangs, a Z28, a T-bird supercoupe. I like the Audi because
it's all wheel drive and seats 4, and it's a bit more appropriate when
taking a customer and your boss out for lunch. But I have to say it's
about the worst handling car that i've owned. I'm sure it gets better with
stiffer springs, a rear sway bar, 18 inch wheels etc, but stock it handles
like an 87 Lincoln Town Car.
