that i don't know. but if they were hot dip galvanized, wouldn't they
be galvanized on both sides?
i do know the sheetmetal has been galvanized at least on one side for
quite some time. even my '87 mustang has galvanized metal on the
outside.
i can tell because it forms a yellowish-whitish residue when i weld it.

I would think there is more chance that the body panels were protected
with zinc chromate primer than galvanizing at the Ford plant in '86.
You can be sure they were not dipping entire bodies after welding. I
wasn't there when they built your Mustang, but that's my recollection
of the industry at that time.
