digging through my memories of old BMW motorcycle email lore...
1) clean it thoroughly
2) mask off any areas you don't wish to have painted
3) repaint it with Krylon (or equivalent) aluminum spray paint
4) let dry a bit and wipe off/in (restores cast appearance)
You are trying to clean a porous surface. It doesn't work very well. By
painting it and wiping it, you are pushing paint into areas now occupied by
grundge.
While I've not done this myself, I have viewed the results. They looked very
good.
Experiment!

Subject: [s-cars] Stains on intake manifold
I don't know what I dropped on there, but I have a couple stains on the
top on my intake manifold that I would like to remove. Any tips for
cleaning it off? I tried simple green but it did nothing. I was
thinking of some carb cleaner? Suggestions please. TIA
