I did the same thing as Gabriel, and it was a tight fit. I took some photos showing how you have to access that lower bolt from underneath, and there isn't a whole lot of room. Though the CD they're on is with Mr. Platt in case he needed them for reference. He's in the process of doing his timing belt for the second time in two weeks as he's a firm believer in the Bill Mahoney school of maintenance/upgrades that teaches us that anything that is worth doing, is worth redoing over, and over.
With regard to the fan, though I don't think this has any bearing on getting to that lower bolt on the timing belt cover, I did it as Fred noted in his instructions. It is 4 bolts, not 3, and it wasn't that bad.
