Craig (and S-gruppees): Please remember that the bearing is not the
only part that can fail on the serpentine belt tensioner. Inspect the
flat round(ish) case that holds the tensioner clockspring for signs of
fatigue cracks. I missed that on mine and, eventually, the case
cracked, leaving the spring nothing to push against. This in turn
resulted in a loss of force on the idler bearing and, therefore, no
tension in the serpentine belt. This immediately kills power steering,
power brakes and the alternator, i.e. you need to pull carefully off the
road and turn off the engine ASAP before the serpentine belt causes a
timing belt issue. One of the many fatal (Achilles heals) of this car
(CPS, fuel pump) that can leave you Dead in the Water (also a Stuart
Woods book I just finished).
