And its ALL Paul's fault.
The evening started out innocent enough. I met up with Paul K. in
Hartford so we could head on over to the event at Vilenti. It was really
cool having a chance to talk with the drivers and naturally meet up with
fellow audi nuts. I'm sure someone else will elaborate on the event
itself (which was really awesome!).
But the real reason for this post is to explain how with one simple lapse
in judgement, Paul has single handedly managed to make me scan through
every classifieds ad I can lay my hands on until I find an UrS at the
right price/condition.
For the ride back to Hartford Paul gave me a chance to play behind the
wheel. I'm certainly used to fast boosted Audi's having modded the hell
out of my 4ktq. Granted my car screams with the k26/T04E like a
cheerleader on prom night from 3k until you blink and need to shift
because you just hit redline.. but Paul's car reminds me of the other kind
of fast that I haven't experienced in a long time: Boost on demand, at
just about any rpm.
Maybe it is just the fact that I haven't driven my 4ktq in several months
as the car is down for yet another engine swap (10 valves just simply were
not enough, apparently), but blasting through the 6(!) speeds in that car
is a real treat. And that flywheel.... Wow.
I keep hearing about all the crazy cars Paul has managed to con his
friends into having a turn behind the wheel in, so it was fun to turn the
tables ;) What other car owner hands you the keys and tells you to drive
it like you would your own car (and to me that means drive it like you
stole it!). Too bad I make a general rule of not pushing a car that I'm
unfamiliar with as hard as the little boy racer in my head would like me
to. The S6 was just begging me for more go pedal hitting some of the high
speed corners as 84 snakes toward Hartford. I don't think I've had the
pleasure of driving a car with 255 series rubber yet since all the cars
I've ever owned have wimpy fenders. Yummy.
Ok, so the UrS is heavy and probably not as tossable as my 4ktq for things
like autocrossing... but I don't think I could pick a better combination
of ride comfort and performance for a daily driver. I think I'm going to
focus on stripping down the 4ktq for mostly track use and look for an UrS
as a daily driver to replace my 90.
Thanks again Paul, for starting the spark that will inevitably blow torch
the contents of my wallet ;)
Its all your fault.>>>
Marc-
1st, "The evening started out innocent enough. I met up with Paul K."...
that statement in itself is a contradiction. I've yet to hear any one ever
once say 'meeting up with me' and 'innocent' in the same sentence.
2nd, heh, thanks for the accolades. As I mentioned, all my car is is a
caraaazy concoction of a little here, a little there, and a lot more here
and there of a verrrrry wide variety of what soooo many on the list have
already BTDT, tried and true. I just pick-ed and chose-ed what I thought
were key elements in my interpretation of a UrS car and what you drove was
the outcome. Great that you enjoyed it so... flattering thanks. Few things
left to do still, but they're coming...
Well, good luck in your new pursuit, I'll keep my eyes open for you as well.
Oh, and I too would torch my wallet... if I still had one.
And I only utter the "drive it like you would your own" statement to those
I've either seen drive or know can. Seeing as running with your ohsosweeeet
4ktq was seemingly dead even, I knew you'd manage it appropriately.
Heh, rumor has it Bill Perron is next up for a flog. Good thing you kept
her reigned in during our ride Marc... Mr. Perron apparently didn't fare
quite as well and had a nice little roadside / wallet "discussion" on his
way back. D'oh. Sure you still want to flog my car Bill?
-Paul just say no to Johnny Law K.

ps <<< keep hearing about all the crazy cars Paul has managed to con his

passenger seat time around LRP in RS6R Fri... maybe just maybe it'll
happen. Never know... I *am* a gigantic hoar afterall...
