So I'm driving to work and the idiot lights for the ABS, battery and
something else all come on all of a sudden, after washing the car. I
figure maybe the alternator belt is slipping....
I figured wrong after the engine dried out and I'm still seeing 12v or
slightly less, with these idiot lights still complaining. I pull a U
and high-tail it home, hoping to get back before the battery dies.
Fortunately, I make it. I get a replacement alternator before the auto
parts store closes, then the ordeal starts.
The f'ing alternator bolt breaks off inside the front engine mount!
There's about an inch of threaded bolt still inside. Okay, so I remove
the front engine mount and try to drill out the bolt. No problem, use
the bolt extractor set that I have.
Of course, I drill nicely into the bolt, get the extractor part inside
and (snap) the extractor breaks off inside the bolt.
Now I have a seriously hardened piece of steel embedded into the bolt,
can't drill it at all.
Any suggestions, besides taking the piece to my mechanic and have him
take a stab at it? He's got much more equipment than I have at home.
Unbelieveably, Home Depot had the right size, thread pitch and length
bolt in the proper grade of steel to replace the broken bolt. Now the
trick is getting the broken piece out.
This effing car is getting on my nerves- first $6000 gets the car as
is, with the Porsche brakes installed. List members and friends only.
