Chris,
You've probably heard the saying, "anyone who defends themselves has a fool
for a client", and I speak from experience. However, I'm certain you will
get your fine reduced if you appear and challenge it on almost any grounds,
and certainly being that you are out-of-province (country, for that matter)
you should be able to plead some ignorance and hopefully get your V1 back.
Having someone defend you who is familiar with procedures is always helpful.
I assume you weren't stopped for speeding at the same time.
