Guys,
Threading in mail readers is conventionally done using the "In-Reply-To"
field in the message header. Not only Firefox, but many other mail
readers support this as well. Each message has a unique ID generated by
the sender's mail transport agent ("Message-ID"), and when replying a well
behaved mail program will take the Message ID of the original message
and put it in the In-Reply-To field of the new message.
I think gmail adds its own heuristics to the conventional threading
algorithm.
