Dave,
If I would have had documentation telling me which fuse was in the circuit
when I started this mess that's where I would have started :) Or if by some
odd chance Audi would actually put all the functions a fuse does on thir
list. In the absence of documentation until my good friends here on the
list came to the rescue I started at the problem and worked backwards.

Calvin: You just discovered the first rule of electrical trouble
shooting: Start at the beginning and trace the current through until
you find the problem. This would mean first making sure that there was
current in the circuit by checking a) voltage at the fuse and b) the
state of the fuse.
On the bright side, you did learn something, e.g. how to take apart and
figure out how a particular relay works. I am sure that you will get to
use that knowledge at some point in your Audi ownership. So your time
was probably well spent in the end. ;>)
