The lack of guages and headlights much like you turned the key off ?  
Could well point to a malfunctioning ignition switch.   Bentley's first 
step in diagnosis is probably check codes.  Lack of any could point to 
the switch, but you could probably determine this by trying to 
duplicate the cutoff by slight movements of the key, or restore 
operation when it dies by moving the key.  Or there could be codes 
pointing to a different problem, but what you have described is 
ignition switch failure.

could it be the ignition switch, I can turn the key back a little after 
starting the car, I actually have been doing this lately, perhaps it is 
now causing me a problem?  ISV perhaps, my only ideas so far.  Would 
there be any codes thrown by this lil' phenomina, should I have them
