Thanks for the hysterical...er, historical info, Scott.
The Trans-Am 200 used a 2.110 (79.5 x 85) and the IMSA 90 used a 2.190 (80 x
85) displacement. It seems unlikely that the American sanctioning bodies
would have the same equivelency figure as FIA (I mean, since when do
sanctioning bodies ever agree with each other about anything?). Anybody
have any historical tech on this? I'm suggesting that while the 2.1 might
have originally been dictated by homologation rules, Audi might have stayed
with it, even when they had the chance to increase the displacement. Far
fetched?
Speaking of far fetched, now would be a good time to remind the group that
Joe Hoppen told me point-blank that they made more power out of the Trans-Am
200 than they did any other I5 (that would include PP cars). I asked him
again and he repeated his answer. Unfortunately, I did not ask him any
follow-up questions. Assuming he didn't just make a mistake, I assume he
meant they made more power in development, but were perhaps unable to use
all of it in competition, since we know the IMSA 90 and the PP cars are
officially rated higher in hp than the T/A 200.
