I have tried to do some searching of the archives - that Google search
tool does not work too good.
 
I am going to try to take it apart and do as you suggest. May try to tap
threads on both sides of the rod and join with a threaded sleeve.

See if the two ends of the rod could be bolted together somehow
(coupling device or two bolts welted together perhaps.)
