I can make a stab - basically anytime you are using one of the FM
transmitters (especially one that actually broadcasts a radio signal
as opposed to being hardwired into the FM antenna wire), you are
losing a lot of sound quality.

BTDT, using a FM transmitter on a MP3 player for a year or so+  (I hop
in and out of a lot of vehicles with and without CD players, sometimes
in areas with no radio coverage, so that allows me to always play my
music...)
