[s-cars] Future PSO/POS and coil replacement alternatives?

As our cars age, they are all going to have PSO/POS and coil failures
(its only a matter of time - it seems). I have long wondered when these
parts are going to be NLA (no longer available) and what we (or the next
owner(s)) would do then to keep our cars on the road then. On that
basis, I pose the question: Can the latest generation of integral
POS/PSO and coils (all one unit now) be adapted for use on our cars?

I am thinking something from 225 hp 1.8T. I can imagine wires running
from our PSO/POS input plugs directly to these new unit parked directly
on our lovely F5DP0R spark plugs. In the short term, there would be no
"coil" cover.. However, I am sure that could soon be fixed, either in
CF or billet aluminum. Any thoughts? (And the recent round of failures
and recall due to some manufacturing problem don't count).
