Mine went the same way the first time. Cut 3 inch of the black insulation,
cut and spliced the wires, taped the 3 inch of insulation. The second one, I
managed to push the black insulation 3 inch and splice the wire with no
damage to the black insulation. I you're really anal, there should be a way
to replace the wires from the coil to the plug but it will be a real PITA.
And for diconnecting the wires from the coil, I don't think it's feasible.
Vincent.

List Gurus!
Well turns out the POS wasn't a POS. It was others have noted, a bad coil.
Went (actually sent the wife) to the local stealership to buy the part
today. Putted to and from work on 4 cyls (what a bummer!) and got down to
swapping it out after dinner.
First off, is there a written procedure for this? If not, I can see why.
It was a pain in the tuckus! Special thanks to Rich A. for keeping my head
on straight when I paniced upon trying to figure out who to wire the new
coil. Ended up butt crimping the ends to the existing connector. I did not
have the guts to try to get the old wire out of the connector as I had
visions of crumbling plastic and did not have the proper tools. Also how
does one get the new wire into the existing sheath without cutting it open?
I ended up slicing mine a partial bit down in order to get the leads
through.
Anyway, roughly 2.5 hrs later the car is running like a top again!
Again thanks to all for the diagnosis. This list is great.
Cheers,
Riff
