Bill/Charlie,

First of all thanks for the help.  Bill kind of made my point, i.e. height
differences.  Since I know the '92 S4 springs are a little shorter than the
later ones do I need HDs or Sports?  If I need HDs I have seen two different
part numbers for them...which ones do I use.  Thanks again guys.

I haven't been reading this entire thread, but I thought I'd pass along
something.

I had Bilstein Sports on my 95 S6 with stock springs.    If I went over a
hill or dip too fast, the front wheels would come off the ground.    While
maybe amusing at first, the repeated action eventually wrecked the strut
mounts.   A tech at Bilstein told me that the HDs are the proper strut for
stock springs.    He said the only difference is that the Sports have a
stopper in them to limit the extension of the strut.    HDs, he said have
the same valving and stiffness, but will extend all the way.

Maybe that's right, maybe not, but I wanted to pass it along and maybe save
someone the trouble of having to do the job twice and pay for it twice like
I had to.

There is a discussion on Bilstein shocks down toward the bottom

The part numbers for Bilstein Sport shocks for our UrS4/S6 cars:
 P36-0369 front
 B46-2066 rear

Another thing worth mentioning, on Bilstein Sport shocks. The regular
Bilstein Sport shocks now come with one snap ring groove for the snap
ring that holds the spring seat on the rear shocks. These same rear
shocks used to be provided with four snap ring grooves so you could
set your own ride heigth.

If you find the right supplier, these shocks can still be ordered with
several snap ring grooves. The body of the rear shocks is thick enough
that you can machine in new grooves yourself.
