Alot of great data points to use shared from members on the list. I sometimes run a 255/40 17's ( Firestomne Firehawk EPs) on 17x8's OZ SL's). No rubbing with the street tire. But beware and follow the recommended specs for each of the tire brands. I have tried to run 255 Michelin Pilot sport cups on those same wheels and had handling issues at the limit. Moved them to wider wheels and they were great. Like many of the nuts on this list I've tried to push the limits of the manufacturers recommendations, sometimes you can get away with it sometimes you don't.

I believe this can vary from tire to tire, depending on the
"squareness" of
the cross section of the tire. The point is that the tread be
relatively in
line with the bead, so the sidewall is not deflected outward (or
inward) too
much. So basically you have to check with the manufacturer, for the
specific
tire you plan on using. Tire Rack may also have this info for the tires
they
carry.
Audi speced 245/40/17 for their OE 17 inch rims. I use Kumho Ecsta MX
(23
lb) tires on OZ superleggera (19 lb.) rims, I think it is a great combo
for
the money.
