hello, a corroded field braid doesnt mean that the starter must be replaced, just the braid. i have replaced these several times with no further problems. simply carefully remove a good braid from another starter (with other mechanical problems), remove the corroded braid from your starter. meticulously clean the stub end that was welded to the starter, and the stub of the removed braid. apply silver flux and using easy flo 45 silver or similar and a jewellers flame pre tin and then join the stub end to the starter body. be sure to fabricate a sheet metal heat shield so as not to incinerate things around the joint to be brazed.
