Or, if you want lots of dB and don't mind losing the 6x9's in the rear deck
simply mount a ring spacer for a 10" sub under each 6x9 hole and mount a 10"
to the under-side of each spacer. Lots more than just a sub-box when those
two speakers are firing off the rear window and directly into the cabin.
There is no need to make the hole 10" either, the 6x9 size will do just
fine. SPeakers designed for free-air do better than normal subs for this
application but it doesn't matter a bunch.

Thoughts onbrand?
Chris-
I've gone that route in our old Maxima (just replacing the head unit
and keeping the Bose amps and speakers)- it wasn't that great.
I don't like the sound of the Bose system- I personally would remove
the whole thing,
replace the front speakers with a nice set of 2-way components, leave
the rear deck empty
and put in a nice 10" sub in a sealed enclosure in the trunk. Power
the sub with a nice monoblock amp, the front stage with a nice
2-channel amp. That would give you the best imaging and soundstage.
A friend of mine has a '95 S6 with such a setup, said it's the best
sounding system he's had so far- Alpine HU, MB Quart speakers and I
don't remember what amps. He's had a lot of nice car stereo setups, I
trust his opinion.
His old V-8 had a similar Alpine head unit, Fosgate amps, MB Quart
speakers- another lister is currently enjoying that system, although
IMHO, the music of the Stebro exhaust on a V-8 is better than the
sound system. :-)
Taka
